Venturi Space and Venturi Astrolab Unveil New Lunar Rover to Meet Rising Demand for Small Payload Deliveries to the Moon

MILAN, Italy – October 15, 2024Venturi Space, a company specializing in the development of mobility solutions for the Moon and Mars, and Venturi Astrolab, Inc. (Astrolab), known for designing and manufacturing multi-purpose rovers for space exploration, have introduced a new lunar rover at the 75th International Astronautical Congress. The rover, currently known as FLIP (FLEX Lunar Innovation Platform), is designed to cater to the growing needs of U.S. and European institutions, businesses, and scientific organizations seeking to deliver small payloads to the Moon.

The FLIP rover builds on the technology used in Astrolab’s 2022 FLEX rover, with Astrolab handling design and manufacturing, including key systems such as actuators, chassis, avionics, solar panels, and communication systems. Venturi Space, with facilities across Monaco, Switzerland, France, and the U.S., contributes expertise in cryogenic materials, hyper-deformable wheels, and advanced battery systems. Astrolab is leading the vehicle’s integrated testing from its California headquarters.

The half-ton rover can carry payloads up to 30 kg and is compatible with commercial medium-class lunar landers. It offers opportunities for technology demonstrations, commercial exploration, and scientific research. The project continues Astrolab’s strategy of rapid design-build-test-fly cycles, enhancing capabilities and applying insights from previous missions.

Venturi Space President Gildo Pastor highlighted the company’s 25-year legacy in electric vehicle innovation, stating, “Our expertise enables us to provide long-term solutions for the harsh conditions of the lunar South Pole, withstanding extreme temperatures, radiation, and prolonged darkness.”

Astrolab CEO Jaret Matthews emphasized the rover’s role in setting standards for lunar logistics, comparing it to the standardization of shipping containers on Earth.
