88% of UAE and Saudi Arabia Organizations Investing in AI Report Business Boost – IDC Whitepaper

DUBAI, UAE, November 13, 2024 — A new whitepaper released by Amazon Web Services (AWS) in collaboration with the International Data Corporation (IDC) reveals that early adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) is already driving significant business growth for organizations in the UAE and Saudi Arabia. However, the report also highlights a potential digital divide between early adopters and those still in the planning stages of AI adoption.

The whitepaper, which surveyed 166 organizations across key industries like government, finance, hospitality, and retail in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, found that while only 28% of organizations have begun experimenting with AI, an impressive 88% of these early adopters have reported improved business performance. This underscores AI’s transformative potential for both private- and public-sector organizations in the region.

The report emphasizes that the Middle East is witnessing a rapid AI adoption, with governments recognizing the technology’s power to foster economic growth, social progress, and global competitiveness. The UAE’s National AI Strategy 2031, for instance, outlines clear objectives to position the country as a global leader in AI by 2031.

Despite the acceleration in AI adoption, the whitepaper also identifies several challenges, such as regulatory uncertainty, talent shortages, and data-related issues. In particular, 58% of UAE organizations expressed concerns about unclear privacy and security regulations, highlighting the need for a balanced regulatory framework that promotes both growth and responsible AI development.

Talent availability remains a significant barrier, with 46% of UAE companies citing a lack of digital expertise as a challenge. To address this, governments and organizations across the region are investing in education and training to build a skilled AI workforce, with institutions like the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) playing a pivotal role in nurturing talent.

Moreover, the whitepaper points out that addressing data-related challenges such as security, data management, and inefficient architecture is crucial to accelerating AI adoption. However, these challenges present opportunities for innovation from technology providers to develop modern data systems.

Yasser Hassan, Managing Director of MENAT at AWS, commented: “This whitepaper underscores AI’s transformative potential in the UAE, aligning with the nation’s ‘We the UAE 2031’ vision. Early adoption is key, and organizations that embrace AI are already seeing positive results. AWS remains committed to supporting responsible AI adoption by providing secure infrastructure and expertise to help businesses grow.”

AWS continues to collaborate with regional authorities and businesses, offering AI solutions to empower organizations in the Middle East to leverage AI’s full potential.
