Tokyo, Japan – Baseload Power Japan Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Sweden-based Baseload Capital, recently co-hosted a business case competition with Waseda University’s Global Management Program. The event focused on developing geothermal energy in Japan and took place at Waseda University’s School of Commerce, featuring approximately 130 students from Waseda University and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
The competition’s theme was “Enhancing Awareness and Acceptance of Geothermal Energy in Japanese Local Communities.” In the final stage, four of the 22 teams were selected to present their proposals while the remaining students role played as local residents, government officials, NGOs and hot spring owners, posing questions to the presenters. After thorough deliberation, one team was declared the winner.
Johanna Lindquist, Minister Counsellor / Deputy Head of Mission from the Swedish Embassy, served as the event’s esteemed keynote speaker, sharing Sweden’s experience in fossil-free transformation and sustainable energy policy. “Sweden’s early decarbonization efforts led to stronger economic growth,” she told attendees. “Sustainability gives business competitive advantage and is a long-term win-win for all parties involved. It’s important for all parts of society to work together.”
The competition showcased students’ innovative ideas and offered valuable learning opportunities. “We aim to encourage students to learn from real business cases by creating viable business and marketing strategies,” said Waseda University Associate Professor Jesper Edman. “We thank Baseload Power Japan for their collaboration and engagement with the students.”
“Understanding and listening to community stakeholders is crucial for geothermal projects in Japan,” said Petter Sund, Representative Director of Baseload Power Japan. “We aim to inspire students to consider the dual merits of the green transition and regional revitalization, and how that can contribute to creating vibrant rural communities. Baseload Power Japan is dedicated to promoting geothermal energy and developing next-generation talent through similar initiatives in the future.”
