Dubai, UAE, 28 August 2022: Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) participated in the 3rd Forum for Women in Research organised by the University of Sharjah in conjunction with Emirati Women’s Day. The Forum discussed a number of research and scientific papers on women in research and their research interests. During the forum, DEWA’s Research and Development (R&D) Centre presented two specialised panel discussions; the first was about a patent registered by the Centre for a project to measure the reflection of solar radiation on surfaces using an autonomous vehicle, and the second was about creating integrated photovoltaic solar panels to endure extreme weather conditions.

This helps them keep pace with developments, deal with various challenges, and raise a promising future generation in a safe and sound manner. DEWA’s support for its Emirati female employees across all divisions has resulted in making them inspiring regional and global models, and essential partners in the development and prosperity of the UAE. DEWA is one of the national organisations supporting women in the energy sector, especially renewable and clean energy, and sustainability. This has made it a role model for government and private organisations inside and outside the UAE,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.
“Emirati female employees at DEWA prove their competence every day and consolidate their essential role in enhancing DEWA’s position as one of the most distinguished and leading utilities in the world. Emirati female employees constitute 83% of the total female workforce at DEWA. Emirati female employees in the R&D Centre are 93% of the total female workforce at the R&D Centre. They hold higher degrees in science and engineering. The centre has 44 male and female researchers, including 26 PhD and master’s degree holders,” added Al Tayer.
Al Tayer praised the role of Emirati female employees in the R&D Centre in achieving DEWA’s goals to make the Center a global platform that provides innovative solutions and technologies to enhance operations for various sectors of utilities around the world.
“The 3rd Women in Research Forum: “QUWA: Women Empowerment for Global Impact” aims to encourage women to excel in scientific research by presenting their achievements in various disciplines. The University of Sharjah is ranked the 1st in the field of scientific research in the UAE according to Scopus database, as many of our female researchers are playing a vital role in this distinctive achievement. The forum also sheds light on the research role of women in the United Arab Emirates and the Arab Region. It is noteworthy that this annual forum which hosted various local universities and institutes was remarkably successful in the past two years. This year, the participation at the 3rd forum has been expanded, where more than 379 female participants from 64 universities from the UAE and the GCC region have taken part, which will inspire women to continue to receive knowledge, develop skills in various fields and contribute to global development. This would not have been possible without the valuable partnership with DEWA R&D Centre and others to secure 22 research grants in three research categories addressing the most important issues, subjects and challenges of research in several fields,” said Dr. Hamid Al-Naimiy, Chancellor of the University of Sharjah.
During the third Forum for Women in Research, Noora Al Hammadi, from the R&D Centre, gave a keynote address on DEWA’s achievements in empowering women and providing all elements of support for DEWA’s female employees, to maintain their leadership in all areas of national work. This supports DEWA’s vision to become a globally leading sustainable innovative corporation.
